Louis Irving Bartig, 83, born November 28,1933, passed peacefully in his sleep to our Savior on Tuesday, January 24, 2017. A well-loved, local artist who was always creating or fixing wonderful pieces of art work. Louis was a graduate of University City High School and an alumnus of Washington University with the unusual dual degrees in Fine Arts and Commercial Arts. A dedicated husband to his wife, Gretchen E. Bartig (nee Fansin) of 60 years. They first met at Sears where his artist career began as a window dresser. They married on Christmas Eve. He served in the Army at Fort Lewis, WA. On returning he was Art Director at Edison Brothers mainly designing women’s shoes and hand bags for 28 years. He gained his patronage through Morton D. May of May Department Stores, who supported his work. His paintings and models are in various gallery’s, museum’s, and private collections around the United States. Louis retired after teaching and working for Brown Shoe Company. He was an award-winning model builder in narrow gauge railway being a member of the ‘Friday Night Boomers’. He built RC planes and was a member of the St. Charles club. He was an avid antique and grandfather clock collector and repairer as well.

Louis was preceded in death by Louis and Virginia Bartig (nee Courtney) his parents, a loving father to his daughter, Marguerita Louise (Meg) Bartig, brother to Charles C. (Jane) Bartig and their children; and beloved grandfather to three grandsons, Duncan A. Sutton, Connor L. Sutton and Shane D. Kennedy, all of Missouri.

A funeral service will be at 11:00 am Tuesday, January 31, 2017 at Trinity Episcopal Church, 318 S. Duchesne Drive, St. Charles, Missouri 63301 with Rev. Tamsen Whistler officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to services from 10:00 am -11:00 am Tuesday, January 31, 2017 at Trinity Episcopal Church. Interment will be at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery 1:30 pm.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association.
