Edythe M Schumacher
1927 - 2021

Edythe Marie Schumacher, age 93, of Saint Peters, Missouri, passed away on Saturday, January 30, 2021. She was born in Saint Louis, Missouri on March 15, 1927 to Benjamin and Alma Harris.

Edythe was a warm, caring, strong and beautiful woman. She believed family is the most important part of life and loved spending as much time with them as she could. She was especially close to her grandchildren and great grandsons and made it a point to attend as many of their activities as she could. Regardless of the activity, Edythe was on the sideline or in the stands supporting which ever grandchild was playing at that time. She went to drag car races, baseball games and soccer games. She never missed a school program, grandparents’ day, or awards ceremony. She was at every graduation, from pre-k through law school. This was very important to her. Her grandchildren and great grandsons always knew they could count on her to be supportive in each of their endeavors.

Edythe would never turn down a glass of wine when one was offered to her and even a week before her death, she shared a Guinness in celebration. Her granddaughter remembers the family’s trip to Mexico in 2002 in which she would enjoy a tequila sunrise every morning with breakfast, even if she had to go back to the room to lay down afterward.

Edythe loved to share old stories, even when they poked fun at her.

She loved nature. She always had a full bird feeder and enjoyed playing with every dog she met. She enjoyed teaching each of us to observe nature and all its beauty.

She loved flowers of all kinds and colors. She would always get excited to receive a bouquet or hanging basket.

She loved sharing the country home that she and Merle owned. Her favorite things to do were go for a hike, pick wildflowers, and admire all of God’s gifts of nature.

Edythe had a passion for reading. She would read at least 2 books a week and loved sharing her most recent read with any of us. She also enjoyed reading to her grandchildren and great grandsons. They would sit on her lap and she would read to them any book they brought her. Her great grandsons will always think of GiGi sitting on the couch with her nose in a book, but quickly putting it down to spend time with them.

She never missed a birthday or anniversary. She loved collecting cards from the different charities she donated to and would send them to each of her loved ones no matter what the occasion. She also kept every card, graduation program, wedding invitation, and artwork she received from her family. It was abundantly clear her family meant the world to her.

Edythe will truly be missed by all who knew and loved her and remembered always as “mom”, “grandma”, and “Gigi”!

Edythe is survived by her son, Kurt (Betty) Schumacher; her daughter-in-law, JoAnn Schumacher; her grandchildren, Jessica L. Schumacher (Steven M Klotz), and Andrew J Schumacher, (Lauren); and her great-grandchildren, Gavin D Shoemaker, Andrew J Schumacher, Jr. and Landon M. Schumacher. She will be dearly missed by many other family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Merle E. Schumacher; her parents, Benjamin and Alma Harris; her son, Marc Schumacher; and her siblings, Marian (Kenneth) Yeager, and Wilbur (Elaine) Harris.

Visitation will take place from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm with a service to follow at 7:00 pm, both on Wednesday, February 10, 2021 at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals, and Receptions, 937 Mid Rivers Mall Drive, Saint Peters, Missouri 63376.

For the safety of the Schumacher family and their guests face coverings and social distancing is requested for all funeral events.
