Beatrice S. Whiteside, a cherished matriarch, devoted mother, and vibrant spirit, passed away peacefully on May 29, 2026, in St. Louis, Missouri. Born on September 15, 1938, in Bastrop, Texas, Beatrice's life was a testament to love, resilience, and unwavering faith.
Raised and educated at the Buckner Baptist Children's Home in Dallas, Texas, Beatrice went on to attend Hardin-Simmons University, laying the foundation for a lifetime dedicated to both family and community. In her twenties, she worked as an administrative assistant at McDonnell Douglas, bringing her sharp intellect and warm personality to the workplace. Yet it was in her role as a devoted caregiver that she truly flourished, choosing to stay home to nurture her children and build a loving family environment.
Beatrice’s faith was a cornerstone of her life. An active member of Hazelwood Baptist Church during her children’s formative years, she served as the president of the PTA, demonstrating leadership grounded in service and compassion. Her involvement extended beyond the church walls; she was a proud member of the Order of the Eastern Star, holding the esteemed rank of Worthy Matron, and embraced fellowship with the Red Hat Society. Always embracing joy and connection, Beatrice delighted in gardening, puzzles—both jigsaw and crossword—and the simple pleasure of playing games and cards with loved ones.
To know Beatrice was to encounter a remarkable force of nature. She was, by all accounts, the coolest person in any room—sometimes a spark for gentle mischief, sometimes a powerhouse of spirited energy, and often a beautiful blend of both. Her love was deep and fearless, her resilience inspiring. She gave endless encouragement and never hesitated to be unapologetically herself. Laughter came easily to her, a gift that lightened the hearts of all around her. Her devotion to family and community was unmistakable and enduring.
Beatrice was most proud of her family—the fruits of her love and sacrifice. She is lovingly survived by her children Tanya Whiteside, Sherlyn Whiteside, Regina (Thomas) Martin, and Douglas (Tracy) Whiteside; her grandchildren Troy Wyatt, Teah (Kevin) Griffin, Coby (Leanne) Feltner, Shawn (Jeff) Young, Toree (Zac) Williams, Loren (Rick) Goudreau, Jacob Martin, Carson Whiteside, Mason Whiteside, and Nolan Whiteside; and ten treasured great-grandchildren whose lives she deeply cherished. She is also survived by her sisters Berneece Hardin and Barbara Ryer.
Beatrice’s journey was marked by beautiful relationships and a legacy of love that spans generations. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Douglas Whiteside; her parents Joseph and Hazel Sappington; brothers Mayron, Richard, and Joseph Sappington; and sister Beulah Thomas.
In reflecting on Beatrice's life, one cannot help but feel the imprint of her spirit—a remarkable woman who never took herself too seriously but took the work of love and laughter very seriously indeed. Her presence was a blessing, her memory a treasure that will forever inspire those who were lucky enough to know her.
She will be profoundly missed but never forgotten, a shining beacon of love, laughter, and faith to all whom she touched.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date - please check back for updated service details.
