Bernard E. Groharing, born on January 3, 1940, in Savanna, Illinois, passed away on February 2, 2026. He lived a life marked by dedication, compassion, and a remarkable commitment to service.

Bernard graduated from Roosevelt Military Academy in Aledo, Illinois.  He enjoyed a fulfilling career with the Department of Defense and the Department of the Army, where he contributed for over 35 years until his retirement. During his career as the Director of Communications, he was responsible for bringing the first Fibre Optics into the state of Utah for Dugway Proving Ground. He also engineered the laying of the cables for the timing devices for the 1980 Lake Placid Winter Olympics.  His professional life was complemented by his honorable military service in the Air Force. During his time in service, he was stationed in Turkey, an experience that shaped his character and outlook on life.

Known for his sociable nature, Bernard never met a stranger. He possessed an extraordinary talent for fixing anything, whether it was mechanical or electronic. His can-do spirit made him a reliable friend and neighbor, as he tackled problems with confidence and skill. He also spent time volunteering for the Special Olympics in 1985. He was a member of the American Legion Post 388 Honor Guard and spent time as the Commander for the Post.

Outside of his professional endeavors, Bernard found immense joy in various hobbies. He was an avid woodworking enthusiast and had a particular passion for working with stained glass. An accomplished golfer, he celebrated the achievement of a coveted hole-in-one, which he treasured. Bernard also cherished the winter months, which he spent in Arizona with Nadine, traveling in their motor home and enjoying the warm weather.

His proudest accomplishments extended beyond personal achievements, as Bernard actively participated in numerous mission trips, impacting communities in places such as Oakville, Iowa; Joplin, Missouri; and Benton, Missouri. He dedicated himself to service and community support, leaving a lasting legacy of generosity and goodwill.

Bernard was deeply committed to his family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Nadine Groharing, with whom he shared an inspiring marriage of 65 years. He leaves behind children Lori (Bruce) Bielema, Scott (Christi) Groharing, and Chad (Lynn) Groharing; six grandchildren, Annette (Ryan) Clark, Brooke (Leandro) Santillan, Courtney (the late, Brad) Lown, Samantha (Grayson) Adams, Brady (Jen) Groharing, and Katie (Wyatt) Craven; as well as six step-grandchildren and an impressive 21 great-grandchildren. Bernard is also survived by his brothers, Richard (Samantha) Groharing, Don (Jane Ann) Groharing, and Lee (Sue) Groharing; sister, Jeanne (Jerry) Moshure; and a host of other family members and friends who will carry forward his memory.

He was preceded in death by his son, Jon Groharing; father, Bruce Dunshee Groharing, and mother, Alice Marie Groharing.
