Charles Richard Woody, Sr., affectionately known as "Woody," was born on December 26, 1934, in St. Clair, Missouri, and passed away peacefully on May 24, 2025, surrounded by his loving family in O'Fallon, Missouri. As a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Woody leaves behind a remarkable legacy filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories.
Woody's professional journey was marked by his tenure as Chief Engineer at Petrolite, where he earned the endearing nickname "The Chief." His technical expertise also shone through his work at McDonnell Douglas, contributing to the intricate fuselages of the Phantom and Voodoo aircraft. His playful spirit extended beyond coaching; he was a celebrated athlete himself, winning a Gold Medal in Baseball at the Senior Olympics. The stories of his adventures often began with the whimsical mention of “Fairytales,” reflecting his zest for life and ability to find joy in every moment.
Family vacations were a hallmark of Woody’s life, filled with many memorable trips both within the country and abroad, often alongside his beloved wife, Carol A. Woody née Hedgpeth. Together, they shared an incredible journey spanning over 70 years, with 68 of those years as a devoted married couple. Woody cherished his role as a patriarch and adored spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, being a figure of love and support in their lives.
Those who had the pleasure of knowing Woody described him as hardworking, loving, funny, and generous. His ability to bring light-heartedness to any gathering made him a beloved figure among friends and family.
