Celebrating the Life of
Darrell Lane Collins
“Creep” to his friends
1956 – November 7, 2025
A Life Remembered
Darrell Lane Collins, lovingly known as “Creep” by his friends, passed away peacefully on November 7, 2025, at the age of 69. The nickname “Creep” followed him since his football days—his coach gave it to him after noticing how slowly and calmly he’d move off the field, a quiet steadiness that would become part of his nature throughout life.
Born and raised on Vernon Avenue in St. Louis, Missouri, Darrell grew up in a close-knit neighborhood surrounded by family, laughter, and love. He was the son of the late Julius K. and Berdia Collins, who instilled in him strong values of discipline, faith, and compassion. From an early age, Darrell accepted Christ at Church of Christ Temple, grounding his life in faith and guiding the moral compass that defined him.
He often said his father taught him structure, while his mother made him feel like a little king—maybe she knew something the rest of us didn’t. Even as a child, Darrell displayed remarkable character; he never received spankings himself but would always stand up for others, even taking one for his sister Michelle so she wouldn’t have to. His sense of loyalty, protection, and selflessness would be hallmarks of his life.
Education & Early Years
Darrell was a proud graduate of Washington Elementary, Sumner High School’s Class of 1974, and Ottawa University’s Class of 1978. From a young age, his determination, focus, and kindness shined through—traits that would guide him throughout his life both personally and professionally.
Music was a lifelong love of Darrell’s. He delighted in the sounds of Earth, Wind & Fire and Stevie Wonder, which reflected his joyful spirit and deep appreciation for life’s rhythm and energy.
Athletic Legacy
Darrell was a gifted athlete from an early age. A right-handed outfielder scouted by professional teams, including the St. Louis Cardinals and Pittsburgh Pirates, he was the starting centerfielder for Sumner High School from 1971–1974 and also played centerfield for the Mathews-Dickey American Legion team, where his talent and love for the game stood out. In 1974, he was the team’s second-leading hitter with an impressive .450 batting average.
At Ottawa University, Darrell played baseball as the starting centerfielder from 1974–1977, leading his team in hitting and base stealing. He also excelled on the gridiron, playing football in high-school and college on scholarship, demonstrating his versatility and dedication as a multi-sport athlete. His baseball journey began at Mathews-Dickey in 1966, and he went on to play 11 seasons for the St. Louis Blazers semi-pro baseball team, earning Most Valuable Player honors in 1980 and 1983.
Darrell’s impact on the field was matched only by his influence off it. He coached CYC baseball and continued to mentor youth through Mathews-Dickey. In 2015, he was proudly inducted into the Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame, a testament to his lifelong dedication to the sport and to uplifting others through it.
In 1989, he was honored by Mathews-Dickey as a Distinguished Alumnus for his accomplishments both as an athlete and as a leader in the business world.
Professional & Community Leadership
Darrell’s career was defined by service, mentorship, and vision. He served as Vice President of United Way, District Director for the United Negro College Fund (UNCF), and Assistant Vice President at A.G. Edwards/Wells Fargo. His professional life reflected his heart for people—connecting, empowering, and creating opportunities wherever he went.
He was a proud co-founder of Protect, Restore, and Forever Celebrate Sumner, Inc. (PRFC), an alumni-led initiative to preserve Sumner High School as a historical landmark. Alongside his Ottawa University classmates, he also helped establish a scholarship for African American students, ensuring his legacy of opportunity would continue to open doors for generations to come.
A Man of Faith, Family, and Love
Darrell loved deeply and lived fully. He had a kind and gentle spirit, a down-to-earth humor, and a God-fearing heart that guided everything he did. He loved to travel, play golf, watch football and baseball, enjoy music, and spend time with the people who made his life rich.
His children were the center of his world. He loved Evan, Andrea, and China-Fumi with a fierce and unwavering devotion. He would give his last, even if it meant he had nothing left for himself, to ensure his children had what they needed—love, protection, and a foundation to thrive. His life was defined by this selfless commitment, and his legacy as a father will live on through the love he poured into his family.
His second marriage to Florence A. Collins was a true blessing—she brought him peace, laughter, and a renewed sense of joy. The two met years ago at their daughter China-Fumi’s art show, where he was hosting a scholarship event. That day, a simple act of service turned into the beginning of a love that helped him slow down, breathe, and savor life.
