Doris Jane Johnston, née Palecek, passed away peacefully on April 8, 2026, in Chesterfield, Missouri, at the age of 96. Born on December 16, 1929, in St. Louis, Missouri, Doris's life was a beautiful tapestry woven with love, dedication, and quiet strength.
Doris attended Roosevelt High School in St. Louis, where she found joy in her home economics classes—a passion that would echo throughout her life. Her early career began as a bank teller, marked by a warm professionalism and an eye for detail. Yet, it was in the heart of her home and family that she found her truest calling. After she and her beloved husband, Arthur Raymond Johnston, whom she shared 75 years of marriage with, began to grow their family, Doris devoted herself to being a stay-at-home mother. In this role, she became the family's chauffeur, seamstress, cook, housekeeper, and ever-patient guide through the joyful chaos of childhood.
As her children stepped into adulthood and new paths of their own, Doris embraced the workforce once again. She served diligently as a secretary and later as an editor for the Catholic Health Association Magazine, contributing her skill and care to the wider community.
Doris’s personality was quietly reserved at first, but those close to her knew the deep warmth and loyalty she carried inside. She developed cherished friendships through square dance and her church community, sharing laughter and companionship that enriched her years. She and her husband Art delighted in square dance and round dance, bonding over the rhythms that punctuated their lives together.
Her hands were never still—Doris was an accomplished crafter, skillful in crochet and needlepoint, weaving art into everyday life. Puzzles of all kinds fascinated her, whether jigsaw or word games, reflecting her sharp mind and patient spirit.
Above all, Doris was proud of her family. Her greatest joy was found in her role as a grandmother.
She is survived by her son Raymond Johnston and his wife Karen May Johnston, her daughter Pamela Johnston and her husband Tommy Daher, and her treasured grandchildren Lethe, Ember, and Austen. These living threads of her legacy carry forward the love she cultivated so deeply.
Doris was preceded in death by her husband Arthur Raymond Johnston; her parents Joseph William and Lillian Palecek; her brother Arthur Palecek and his wife Theresa; and her sister Carol Hunt and her husband Bill.
A celebration of Doris Jane Johnston’s life will take place on Thursday, May 21, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the EdgeWild Restaurant, located at 550 Chesterfield Center in Chesterfield, Missouri. Friends and family will gather to honor her remarkable journey and the enduring love she shared so generously.
She will be laid to rest with her husband in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in a private ceremony.
In every stitch she sewed, every puzzle she solved, and every dance she danced with Art, Doris left a mark of grace and steadfast devotion. She will be deeply missed but forever cherished in the hearts of those who knew her.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Doris' honor to the Alzheimer's Association.
