It is with deep love and gratitude for a life well lived that we announce the passing of Dorothy King, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, educator, musician, and faithful servant of the Lord. Dorothy L. King, née Riedel, passed away on June 18, 2026, at the age of 78. Born on October 10, 1947, in Bismarck, North Dakota, Dorothy dedicated her life to education, faith, and family, leaving behind a legacy marked by compassion, devotion, and unwavering kindness.
On June 14th, 1969, Dorothy married Thomas A. King, Jr. at Concordia Lutheran Church in Springfield, Illinois by Rev. Ernst Riedel. Recently, they celebrated 57 years of marriage. Together they built a life centered on faith, family, education, and service to others. Their marriage was a beautiful example of commitment, partnership, and enduring love.
Dorothy embarked on her academic journey at Concordia Teachers College, where she earned her Bachelor’s Degree. Committed to nurturing young minds, she pursued and obtained a Master’s Degree from Webster University. Her passion for learning and education was evident in her professional career as a Lutheran School Teacher and Music Director.
As a dedicated Lutheran school teacher, Dorothy spent her career sharing her love of learning. Her influence extended beyond the classroom, inspiring not only her students but also her own children, all of whom followed in their parents' footsteps and entered the field of education.
Dorothy had a radiant smile which she warmly shared with everyone she met. A woman of deep and abiding faith, she consistently made others feel welcome and valued. Dorothy’s dedication to her students, her church, and her community was steadfast throughout her many years of service.
Outside of her professional life, Dorothy enjoyed gardening, where she found solace and connection with God's creation. She was an avid reader and a lover of music. Dorothy enjoyed vacations and adventures with her family, and cherished time with those she loved. She took immense pride and joy in her role as a grandmother, treasuring time and making memories with her fourteen grandchildren.
Dorothy is survived by her husband, Thomas A. King Jr., who stood by her side throughout her journey; their three devoted children, Tom King III, Cheryl (Jamie) Andes, and Cynthia (Christian) Strickland; and her fourteen cherished grandchildren: Thomas IV, Josiah, Jeremiah, Grace, Faith, Hope, Jonathan, Joy, Callie, Madison, Caleb, Benjamin, Micah, and Sarah. She is also survived by her sister, Debra Sass, and numerous other family members and friends.
She was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Hildegarde and Ernst Riedel; her son, Allen King; and her sister, Cheryl Riedel.
Dorothy will be remembered for her unwavering faith, gentle spirit, dedication to education, love of music and deep devotion to family. Her legacy lives on through generations of students she taught, the family she nurtured, and the many lives she touched through her kindness and service.
