Dorothy Jean (Schmidt) Nelson, a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great great-grandmother passed away peacefully on January 4, 2026, in St. Peters, Missouri, at the age of 98. Born on September 24, 1927, in Sedalia, Missouri, Dorothy lived a life rich in love, service, and memorable connections, leaving behind a legacy that will be cherished by all who had the honor to know her.
Throughout her illustrious career, Dorothy dedicated herself to her community and her family. She began her journey working for the State of Missouri, followed by some time working for the Internal Revenue Service. After her tenure at the IRS, she continued her commitment to helping others at the Red Cross, where she organized and coordinated blood drives across Missouri and beyond. Dorothy held a real estate license for several years, further showcasing her diverse talents. She later served as a Family Support Coordinator for the Department of the Army, organizing extensive conferences around the world, and helping families with the challenges of life in the military.
Dorothy's passion for helping others extended beyond her professional life. She facilitated a mental health program for 17 years, offering healing techniques and support. She chaired the United Way regional fundraising and served as president of a women’s organization, exemplifying her leadership and generosity. Additionally, she volunteered in the Connections with Success Program, enriching the lives of those around her.
A vibrant soul, Dorothy was known for her energy, warmth, and care for her extensive family and friends. Her life lessons were a guiding light for all, as she prioritized the needs of others above her own. Dorothy’s home was a welcoming haven, where family gatherings were filled with joy, laughter, and tall tales. She loved dancing, listening to music, playing cards and games, and particularly enjoyed playing cribbage, achieving third place in the state championship. The beauty of flowers captivated her, and she cherished watching hummingbirds and collecting birdhouses, always finding joy in nature and the simple pleasures of life.
Dorothy is survived by her beloved children, Jude (Russ), Craig (Mari), Jeanne (Randy), Jennifer (Mike), Mary (Neil), Lydia (Mike, deceased), Anne (Tim), Kathy (Roy), Jane (Robby), and Amy (Kurt), along with her cherished grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind her dear sisters, Betty and Sandy. Dorothy's strength of spirit and loving presence will be profoundly missed by her family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband Ed, her father Sylvester Schmidt, her mother Lorine Schmidt, her companion Dusty, and her siblings Bonnie (Ken), Wanda (John), and Marge.
A visitation to celebrate Dorothy's life will be held on January 18, 2026, from 1:00 PM until 4:00 PM, followed by a funeral service at 4:00 PM at Newcomer Funeral Home, located at 837 Mid Rivers Mall Drive, St. Peters, Missouri. Family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance of a remarkable woman whose life was a testament to love and resilience. Dorothy Jean Nelson may have departed from this earth, but her spirit will forever remain in the hearts of those who loved her dearly.
