Dr. Roger Lair Smith

Dr. Roger Lair Smith, born on August 21, 1938, passed away peacefully on August 23, 2026, at the age of 88. His life was a testament to his dedication to Jesus Christ his Lord and Savior and a great love for his family.

After high school Roger served his country in the United States Navy, where he worked assisting aircraft mechanics on aircraft carriers. He enjoyed this work and it began his interest in aviation.

Roger earned his PhD in Aerospace Engineering, upon which he built a rewarding career that he loved. Roger focused his professional life on the design of helicopter rotor blades. He found great fulfillment in this work, combining intellectual rigor with a love for solving complex problems. He considered himself blessed to work until he was in his seventies.

At the center of Roger's life was his strong personal relationship with Jesus. He was devoted to putting God first in everything he did and read the Bible many times over throughout his life. He continually sought Gods's desire for his life and how to fulfill his purpose in Christ. He regularly attended church at First Baptist Church of O'Fallon. Many of his friends came from their church family. 

Roger had a deep involvement in his community. He found purpose in volunteering at church and organizations such as Child Evangelism Fellowship and Righteous Rides. Through these activities, he demonstrated a steadfast commitment to helping others, offering support, guidance, and friendship to those in need.

Roger loved being outdoors and spending time in nature. Over his lifetime, he especially enjoyed hiking with his family, treasuring these moments of togetherness surrounded by God's beauty. Roger valued and cherished time spent with those he loved.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Phyllis (Anna) Smith, whose presence was constant and steadfast throughout their shared years. His memory lives on in his children: daughters Deborah (and Michael) LeVar, son Scott (and Giselle) Smith and daughter Bobbi (and Scott) Huston. Roger also leaves behind a proud legacy as a grandfather, cherished by five grandchildren: Alexander Smith, Nathan Huston, Wyatt Huston, Emmett Huston, and Adalyn Huston. His siblings, Phyllis (and the late Gayle) Ford and Daniel (and Beth) Smith, survive him as well.

Roger is preceded in death by his father, Billie Smith; his mother, Nellie Smith; and his grandchild, Elaina Marie Smith. Their memories are intricately woven into the tapestry of his life.

Roger was laid to rest at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery with full military honors, including a Navy nine-gun salute, the ceremonial folding of the flag and Taps- a fitting tribute to his years of service and sacrafice.

The passing of Dr. Roger Lair Smith leaves a profound absence, yet his Love for the Lord, servant heart, and unwavering love for his family continue to inspire all who had the privilege to know him. A legacy defined by his devotion to God, Roger leaves us with reminders of his service and love. These memories will endure through the lives he touched and the family who surrounded him.
