James Coan, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on November 11, 2025, in Lake St. Louis, Missouri, at the age of 91. Born on January 2, 1934, in Olney, Illinois, Jim was a man whose life was characterized by devotion to family, unwavering kindness, and a remarkable career.

Jim began his professional journey as a radio dispatcher in Murphysboro, Illinois, before transitioning to the role of a Police Officer in Mt. Carmel, Illinois. His commitment to service led him to work as a Correctional Officer at Marion Federal Penitentiary. Following his graduation from the first A&P graduating class at SIU Carbondale, he found fulfillment in the aviation industry as an Aviation Mechanic. He spent nearly 30 years in this field, starting with Ozark Airlines in St. Louis and ultimately retiring from American Airlines.

His service didn’t stop there; Jim honorably served in the United States Marine Corps from 1953 to 1956, earning the National Defense Service Medal and achieving the rank of Expert Marksman. His time stationed overseas in Japan and in Korea with the 1st and 3rd Marine Divisions marked him as a man of courage and dedication to his country, a true patriot. In a testament to his remarkable life, Jim had the honor of taking the Honor Flight to Washington D.C. in 2016. Jim served proudly as a member of the 1st Marine Division Honor Guard.

Jim’s personality shone brightly in all that he did. Known for his caring, good-hearted nature, he was truly one of the good guys—stronger than dirt, yet gentle in his interactions with others. He found joy in traveling, developed an avid interest in history, and cherished the simple pleasure of feeding his ducks, activities that reflected his love for family and the world around him. His proudest accomplishments were undeniably his family and “his girls,” underlining the deep affection and gratitude he held for those he loved.

He leaves behind a legacy of love and resilience through his daughters, Barb (John) Creely, Lisa Haller, Terry (Paul) Disper, and Dianne (Danny) Worden, along with his grandchildren: Kyle (Rachel) Creely, Jonathan (Lindsay) Creely, Amanda (Kevin) Obst, Elizabeth (Nick) Starks, Jordan Haller, Andrew (Katie) Disper, Michael (Ariel) Disper, and Eric Worden. Additionally, he enjoyed the warmth and joy brought by his 9 great-grandchildren. His loving companion, Juanita Cermak, also stood by his side, bringing companionship and happiness to his later years.

Remembering Jim's journey involves honoring the cherished memories shared with him, including the laughter, the lessons, and the immeasurable love he poured into each relationship. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Sandra, his parents Charles and Caroline, and his siblings Mary Rudolphi, Tom Coan, and Bill Coan.
