James Joseph Goestenkors, 86, passed away on August 26, 2025, surrounded by those who love him. Jim was born on February 16, 1939 in St. Louis, MO. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, son, brother, uncle and friend. Jim was known for his laid-back positive attitude, willingness to help others and quick wit. Jim left behind a legacy of love and cherished memories.
Jim built a beautiful life and family with his wife, Brett, and was the MOST patient girl dad to their three daughters. Nothing made him happier than earning the title Grandpa Jim. He was an energetic ball playing, hide and seek finder Grandpa and Great Grandpa who sat through hours and hours of in town and out of town grandkid activities, graduations and sports in all types of weather. Rain, snow, sleet and sun, were the perfect reasons to seek shelter close to the concession stand where he would always grab some popcorn. Concession stand popcorn was always a must have!
At home Jim could be found outside tending to his fishpond, garden, grape vines and pristine yard. He enjoyed making wine which he humbly shared at family dinners. In the evenings Jim enjoyed watching any of our St. Louis sports teams while enjoying some ice cream or popcorn and a cold beer.
For 39 years Jim was a dedicated telephone repairman in the telecommunications field, but he was known to work on much more than just phones. Whenever family, friends or neighbors needed a hand, they knew Jim would happily be there, with his tool bucket, as soon as possible! He had the ability to fix and salvage almost anything from cell phone cases to Christmas lights, vacuums and crock pots. This is true even of his old Chevette, which he bought without air conditioning, but installed his own a/c, a small oscillating fan bolted to a board that he could plug into the cigarette lighter. Jim could fix anything with a little glue, vice grips and his loving hands.
Over the past few weeks Jim approached his diagnosis of advanced pulmonary fibrosis as he did all challenges. With determination, patience and a willingness to try anything that could improve the situation. Through the ups and downs he continued to find enjoyment in life. By being kind to everyone who entered his room, sampling the hospital dessert menu and looking forward to watching Cardinal baseball.
Jim will be lovingly remembered by his devoted wife of 57 years, Brenetta Goestenkors (nee Wilkinson). He was a proud father to three daughters: Jennifer (Fred) Vogt, Lori (Bob) Coleman and Amy Goestenkors Lathrop. His grandchildren who brought him immense joy: Jesse Vogt, Dan Vogt, Tyler (Courtney) Vogt, Cody (Kylie) Vogt, Kyle (Sarah) Coleman, Adam Coleman, Owen Lathrop, Reed Lathrop, and Addalyn Lathrop, along with many great-grandchildren. Each of them carries forward a piece of his spirit, reflecting the love and teachings he shared.
Jim is survived by his baby sister, Dolores (Walter) Thomas and sister-in-law, Janice Goestenkors. His life was enriched by the presence of many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends, who held a special place in his heart.
Jim was preceded in death by his first wife, Susan Goestenkors (nee Carter). His parents Henry (Hap) and Loretta (Sis) Goestenkors. His sister, Rosemary (Art) Goulden and his brother, Robert Goestenkors. He is reunited in heaven with his grandsons he sadly lost too soon, Cameron James and John Henry Lathrop.
