James Patrick Helm, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away peacefully on April 27, 2026, in O'Fallon, Missouri, with his family by his side. Born on August 19, 1942, in St. Louis, Missouri, Jim lived a life marked by kindness, dedication, and a gentle humor that endeared him to all who knew him.
A proud veteran, Jim served his country with honor in the United States Navy, an achievement he held dear throughout his life. Following his military service, he built a long and respected career in the banking industry. Yet, beyond his professional accomplishments, Jim found his greatest pride in his family and his service to his country.
Those who knew Jim will remember his calm and thoughtful nature—he was a great man by every measure, known for his simple kindness and wonderful sense of humor. He never took things too seriously, often sharing a goofy joke that brought smiles and lightheartedness to those around him.
Family memories paint a vivid picture of Jim’s daily joys. He was an expert at crossword puzzles, famously completing them with the most beautiful penmanship, a quiet testament to his meticulous nature. His family fondly recalls him sitting comfortably on his screened-in porch, deep in thought over a challenging puzzle. Equally memorable were the slow, deliberate afternoons he spent mowing the lawn on his riding mower, always at the lowest speed, sipping iced tea, and fully immersed in the simple pleasure of the task. These moments reflect a man who appreciated the little joys in life and the peace they brought. Another cherished routine was his afternoon nap before dinner, with a sock gently placed over his eyes, a small, endearing quirk that exemplified his unique personality.
Jim’s interests extended to the television programs he enjoyed, particularly the Military Channel and the Smithsonian Channel, reflecting his lifelong respect for history and service. His love of knowledge and learning was a subtle yet powerful part of who he was.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Linda Helm, and his children: Sheri (Axel) Phillips, Sandra (Robin) Parks, and Matthew (Michelle) Helm. Jim was a loving grandfather to Jonathan, Kiersten, Aria, Alexander, Davis, and Charles; and bonus grandpa to Ian (Makenzie), Zach, Cooper, Addisyn, Zac (Haley), Kristen, Teah, Tiffany, and Tim (Kim). His heart also embraced great-grandchildren Lily and Violet. He was surrounded by the love of his siblings—Donna (Stephen) Glenn, Peggy (the late Keith) Montoya, Christine (the late Paul) Noonan, Mary (the late Gary) Eschbach, Betty Helm, Donald (the late Carol) Helm, John (Sue) Helm, Larry (Melissa) Helm, and Paul (Karen) Helm.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, James Arthur, Lucille Helm, Ruth Helm, and his sister, JoAnn Helm.
