Listen to Obituary

Joan Carol Ifland (née Harrison), December 31, 1938 – August 1, 2026, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, passed away surrounded by the love of her family.

Joan grew up in Kirkwood, Missouri, the daughter of George E. and Lillian J. Harrison, and was a graduate of Kirkwood High School Class of 1957. She spent her entire life in St. Louis, Missouri where she and her husband, Jack, built their home, raised their family, and created a life grounded in family, friendship, and tradition.

Joan was the devoted wife of Jack D. Ifland and the loving mother of James C. Ifland and the late Jeffrey G. Ifland. She was a proud grandmother affectionately known as Meme to Jesse, Jordan, and Jennifer, each of whom held a special place in her heart. She is also survived by her brother, John T. Harrison.

A homemaker throughout her life, Joan created a home filled with warmth, beauty, and care. She had impeccable taste, an unmistakable sense of style, and a love of fashion, shopping, her friends, and, above all, her family.

Though only five feet tall, Joan had a presence far greater than her stature. She was sophisticated, quick-witted, and wonderfully expressive. Her family will forever remember her famous “Meme Eye,” the look that said everything without her needing to say a word. She had high standards, a sharp sense of humor, and a personality that could fill a room.

Whether she was spending time with friends, making family gatherings special, or declaring it was time to be “off like a herd of turtles,” Joan brought humor, charm, and style to everyday life. She will be remembered for her beauty, style, humor, strength, and unmistakable presence, but most of all for the way she shaped the lives of her friends and family. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

A private family service will be held to celebrate Joan’s life. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society in Joan’s memory.
