Joe C. Bushong, a beloved figure whose spirit warmed the hearts of all who knew him, departed from this earthly home on August 26, 2025, at the age of seventy-seven, in Elsberry, Missouri. Born on February 6, 1948, in St. Louis, Joe's journey through life was marked by a profound commitment to service, community, and faith.
A graduate of Mullanphy Middle School, Joe’s quest for knowledge led him to Roosevelt High School and eventually culminated at Missouri Baptist College. He furthered his education at the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, proudly earning his Master’s degree. This academic achievement laid the groundwork for a lifelong dedication to the Baptist church. He served as a minister in Rolla, Missouri and as a Deacon and member of Waypoint Church in St. Peters, Missouri, Joe was a shining light, consistently attending services with zeal and participating fervently in discussions that revered the sacred passages of the Bible.
His career was as distinguished as his academic pursuits. Joe dedicated thirteen years to the State of Missouri Human Services, ensuring that many received the assistance and care they deserved. Prior to this, he served honorably in the United States Air Force from 1966 to 1972, rising through the ranks to become a Sergeant. His time in service was marked by notable honors, including the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Air Force Good Conduct Medal, testament to his dedication and integrity.
Beyond his professional and spiritual accomplishments, Joe was an individual of remarkable charisma. His passion for singing led him to join a quartet, sharing his vocal gifts with the broader community. He possessed a booming laugh that echoed joy and companionship, spreading happiness wherever he roamed. A true pillar of his church and community, Joe was cherished for his engaging debates about Biblical passages, and his vibrant personality made a lasting impact on all fortunate enough to cross his path.
A devoted family man, Joe is mourned by his beloved wife, Fern Bushong, nee Thompson, and his loving son, Joshua Bushong. He leaves behind his brother, Barry (Linde) Bushong, his sister-in-laws, Bonnie (Jerry) Myers and Vivian Upchurch, and three nephews who are sons of Barry. Joe was predeceased by his father, J.W. Bushong, and his mother, Clara Bushong, nee Presley.
As we remember Joe C. Bushong, let us honor the legacy of a man whose life was imbued with service, joy, and an enduring love for his family and faith. Though he has left this world, the impression he made will forever linger in the hearts of those he touched.
