John L. Hank Jr.

John L. Hank Jr., affectionately known as "Butch," passed away on June 24, 2025, at the age of 78. Born on June 6, 1947, in Cincinnati, Ohio, he lived a life marked by dedication, intellect, and a touch of teasing humor.

John embarked on his professional journey after completing his undergraduate studies in Political Science at Brigham Young University. He furthered his education with a Master’s of Business Administration from Columbia University. He began his career at Chase Manhattan Bank in New York City before relocating to St. Louis in 1980. There, he served as the Chief Financial Officer for Apex Oil Company, a role he held with distinction until his retirement in 2014.

A man of few words, John was known for his sarcastic wit, particularly when the subjects of politics or religion arose for debate. His steady and reliable nature earned him the respect and friendship of those who were fortunate enough to be part of his inner circle. He was known to be generous, willing to give the shirt off his back to those in need.

John had a wide array of interests that enriched his life. He was an avid follower of current events and a passionate sports enthusiast, especially enjoying watching the Yankees play. He loved sunbathing at the pool or the beach, and always loved listening to The Beach Boys while working on his tan.  His talents as a deal finder and negotiator were widely recognized, as was his sweet tooth for chocolates and desserts. Above all, his pride in providing for his family was unmistakable.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Carrie Hank; six sons, John Hank III, Jeff Hank, Jeremy (Maggie) Hank, Jason (Gina) Hank, Jared Hank, and Connor (Courtney Becker) Hank; his daughter, Samantha (Bailey Norton) Powell; and his best friend, a cherished four-legged companion named Brody. He will also be remembered by two grandchildren, Jeffrey Hank and Jason Hank, along with a host of other family members and friends.

John was preceded in death by his father, John Louis Hank; his mother, Nellie May Gough, nee Applegate; and a grandchild, John Hank IV.

An open house will be held on June 28, 2025, from 1:00 until 4:00 pm  to celebrate John's life at 235 Trailtop Ct, Chesterfield, MO 63017. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
