Kathy Cowick, born on a fine September day in 1950 in St. Louis, Missouri, departed this world peacefully on April 11, 2026, in Dardenne Prairie, Missouri, surrounded by the warm embrace of her loving family. If there were a Guinness World Record for “Most Family Facts Stored in One Person’s Brain,” Kathy would have held it hands down — not only was she the family historian extraordinaire, but she knew every twist, turn, and tale that stitched their family tree together. Birthdays? She remembered them all, guaranteed to send that perfectly timed, sometimes cheeky, always heartfelt greeting.
With a wicked sense of humor and a wit sharp enough to cut through any awkward silence, Kathy was the life of every room she entered, capable of making friends wherever she went. She loved animals with a passion that could melt the coldest heart, and her devotion to them was as steadfast as her love for her family. Reading Stephen King novels was her literary guilty pleasure—surely because when you’ve seen all the family drama, a little fictional horror is a delicious change of pace. Trips to Maine were her version of a happy place getaway, where she could recharge her batteries and maybe plot her next sly joke.
Kathy was not just a guardian of family history, but an advocate for mental health, embracing her own journey and celebrating each milestone with courage and grace. Proud doesn’t begin to cover how she felt about her greatest achievements: her daughter Linda (Matt) James, grandson Cody James, niece Tara (Joe Patterson) Steinhoff, close confidant and cousin Sabine Robinson, great-niece Abigail Patterson, and a host of other treasured family members and friends—each of whom were both her audience and her biggest fans.
Of course, setting the stage for Kathy’s charm and resilience were her parents, Bud and Lyn Cowick, sister Debbie Steinhoff, aunt Carole Robinson, and uncle Bill Robinson, who predeceased her but certainly left their mark in the spirited legacy she carried forward.
In more ways than one, Kathy was a unique blend of kindness and cleverness, love and laughter — a rare soul who made the art of living look like a joyful romp. Those fortunate enough to know her will remember her not just for what she did, but for who she was: a fierce family historian, a devoted animal lover, a wicked wit, and above all, a loving human being.
Though flowers are traditionally sent to honor such a vibrant spirit, Kathy’s family kindly invites everyone to commemorate her life by considering a donation to the Animal Protective Association in her honor—a fitting tribute reflecting her boundless kindness toward our furry friends.
Rest easy, Kathy. You’ve earned it, and we’re all richer for having known you.
