Larry Dean Waite left us far too soon on June 18, 2026 at the age of 68. Born to Keith and Pauline (De Lapp) Waite on April 5, 1958, in Metropolis, Illinois, Larry’s life was a story both rich and joyful, woven together by his humor, his heart, and his devotion to the people he loved.
The defining hallmark of Larry’s life was the strength of his relationships. He is survived by his beloved wife of 35 years, Lisa (Lucksted) Waite, with whom he built a family full of love and laughter. Together, they raised two children who brought him endless pride—Alex Waite and his wife Jayna (Rother), and Cassie (Waite) Ostmann and her husband Dylan. Some of Larry’s greatest joys were watching Alex and Cassie play sports, he was always the proudest dad in the stands. In recent years, his heart expanded once again with the arrival of his grandson, Eli Waite, who quickly became the apple of his eye.
Family ties were everything to Larry, and that loyalty stretched to his siblings, Paula Borah (and her husband Gary), and Gary Waite (and his wife Pat), as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family members. The loss of his parents, Keith and Pauline Waite, his brother Gene Waite, and his niece Danielle Lucksted weighed on Larry's heart, but he carried their memory forward in the loving home he established with Lisa.
Larry spent the majority of his career as a Senior Engineer with Brightspeed, formerly Century Link, where his work ethic and dedication earned the respect of colleagues and friends alike. He approached every task—whether professional or personal—with the same determination, commitment, and quick-witted humor that endeared him to so many.
What truly set Larry apart was his playful spirit and commitment to those he loved. His humor could light up any room, and his ability to make others laugh became one of the greatest gifts he shared. It was his sense humor that first drew Lisa to him, and it became a lifelong thread that wove through their marriage and into the fabric of the family. As a father, Larry was a steadfast provider and supporter, quietly ensuring his family always had what they needed. He treasured the time spent with his son, sharing countless conversations about baseball and golf, and working side by side on projects that brought them together. Larry devoted himself to raising a strong, kind man, always leading by example. With his daughter, Larry’s playful nature shined brightest. She was always Daddy’s girl, and he stood beside her with constant encouragement and unwavering support through years of education as she pursued her career. Together as a family, some of their most cherished memories were spent around the kitchen table, where game nights were filled with endless jokes, laughter, friendly competition, and the kind of joy that Larry made seem effortless. His love, humor, and dedication to his family will remain a lasting legacy carried forward by all who knew and loved him.
Outside of work and family, Larry was a man of many passions. He loved the game of golf, spending hours on the green with friends and family, reveling in camaraderie and competition. Sports brought him constant joy—especially Cardinals baseball, Illini basketball, and Packers football—but perhaps nothing delighted him more than watching his kids play. His enthusiasm also extended to the world of bowling, where he bowled in leagues alongside Lisa and close friends, earning a reputation as an avid, spirited competitor. Ever crafty and industrious, Larry was happiest with a project at hand, particularly when building or finishing basements—his skills and creativity always on display.
Above all, Larry’s proudest accomplishments were not those found on trophies or in professional accolades, but in the simple, everyday moments—his enduring marriage to Lisa, his children and their accomplishments, and the deep bonds of his friendships.
