Martin “Marty” J. Nicolay, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great great grandfather and friend, passed away peacefully on July 12, 2026, in Creve Coeur, Missouri, surrounded by his loving family. Born on October 6, 1940, in St. Louis, Missouri, Marty’s life was defined by unwavering devotion, gentle strength, a strong work ethic, and the enduring warmth he gifted everyone around him.

Marty always carried a gentle spirit—tough on the outside, yet with a heart full of love and compassion. Family and friends knew that he would do anything for anyone; his goodness and generosity left a mark on all who were fortunate enough to know him. He lived each day not only as a testament to hard work but also with a keen sense of joy for the simple pleasures shared with those he loved.

One of his proudest accomplishments was the marriage to his beloved wife, Phyllis, a loving partnership that spanned an extraordinary 67 years. Together, they built a close-knit family, rooted in love and laughter, which Marty cherished above all. Dancing with Phyllis brought him endless delight. Their love was a bond that glowed with affection and playfulness.

Marty treasured time spent with his family, gathered around a table for cards or Rummikub, or sharing stories and smiles over a meal. He loved fishing, especially the peaceful afternoons on the dock, fishing rod in hand and his trusty lawn chair beneath him, content just to be in the moment. Marty’s love of shooting pool was well known—he was ever protective of his cherished pool table, a gathering spot for friendly competition and fond memories.

Christmas mornings in the Nicolay household were made special by Marty’s devotion to tradition. He ensured everyone started the holiday with a warm, hearty breakfast—a simple act that became an enduring source of joy for the family, and a reminder of his thoughtfulness.

He is survived by his dear wife, Phyllis Nicolay, daughter Laura (Terry) Johnson, grandchildren Colleen (Ryan) Probst, Emily Nicolay, Clay (Stephanie) Johnson, Clint (Asyntha) Johnson, and Chloe (Matt) Roché. He will also be missed dearly by his great-grandchildren Jackson Farmer, Maddie Probst, Nora Probst, Benjamin Boyd, Calvin Boyd, Hazel Boyd, Sawyer Johnson, Gracie Johnson, Deacon Johnson, Elyse Roché, Beckett Johnson, and great-great-grandchild Greyson Farmer. Marty’s legacy continues through his sister Mary Lou Downs, and his sisters-in-law Veronica Nicolay, Kathy Nicolay, and Barbara Summers.

He is now reunited with his son, Martin Joseph Nicolay, Jr.; his parents, James and Julia Nicolay; siblings Delores (George) Spaeth, Barbara (Pat) Moynihan, JoAnn (Joe) Thiemet, Jim Nicolay, Phil (Joan) Nicolay, Robert Nicolay, and Mike Nicolay; brothers-in-law Milton Downs, Jimmy Summers; and his sister-in-law Jerry (Donald) Keller.

Though his loss leaves an ache in the hearts of many, Marty’s greatest legacy is the enduring love he instilled in his family and the countless memories etched into the lives he touched. He taught by example: to cherish loved ones deeply, to laugh often, and to approach each day with humility and gratitude.
