Mary Louise Koenneker, 87, of O’Fallon, Missouri, passed away on Friday, October 16, 2026.
Born on May 28, 1939, in East St. Louis, Illinois, Mary was the daughter of the late Jack and Louise Buck. After graduating from high school, she pursued a career as a hairdresser, continuing to work well beyond the typical retirement age. Her dedication to her profession reflected her strong work ethic and her love for what she did.
Mary was known for her quick wit, infectious personality, and contagious laugh that could bring a smile to anyone’s face. She had a way of lighting up every room she entered, and her laughter was one of those special things that made people around her feel happier. She brought joy wherever she went and had a gift for turning ordinary moments into lasting memories.
Mary loved to golf and was a fiercely competitive player in all kinds of yard and table games. She enjoyed a good challenge and always brought her wit, humor, and spirited personality to the game. Whether sharing a laugh, enjoying time with loved ones, or showing off her competitive side, Mary made life more fun for the people fortunate enough to know her.
Mary will be remembered for her vibrant spirit, her sharp sense of humor, and, above all, the laughter she shared so freely. Her ability to brighten a room and bring smiles to those around her was a gift that will never be forgotten. Though she will be deeply missed, the love, laughter, and cherished memories she leaves behind will live on in the hearts of her family and friends.
Mary is survived by her two children, John Layton of Leasburg, Missouri, and Elizabeth Bell of O’Fallon, Missouri; her sister, Kathy Barlow; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation in Mary’s memory.
There will be no formal funeral services. A private celebration of life will be held to honor and remember Mary.
