Maureen Kowal (née Cunningham), a beacon of love and generosity, passed away peacefully on April 2, 2026, in Chesterfield, Missouri. Born on December 20, 1951, in Kenosha, Wisconsin, Maureen graced the world with a spirit that touched all who knew her.
Throughout her life, Maureen was the embodiment of compassion and kindness. Her loving nature and giving heart were evident in every gesture and every relationship she nurtured. She was deeply cherished by those fortunate enough to be part of her world, especially her many nieces and nephews, to whom she was a beloved aunt. Her genuine care and unwavering support made her a treasured presence in their lives, a testament to the generous soul she was.
Maureen held her family close, proud of her deep connections with her nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. These bonds were among her most precious accomplishments, reflecting the central role family played in her life. Her affection extended beyond immediate relations, touching all who experienced her warm, caring spirit.
She is survived by her devoted husband, James Kowal, who shared her journey through life with unwavering love. Maureen also leaves behind her cherished sisters: Miriam (Jeff) Block, Mary (George) Zalecki, Meg Cunningham, and Kathleen (Kevin) Clary, who each carry forward her legacy of warmth and generosity.
Maureen’s parents, Arthur and Jane Cunningham, as well as her brothers, John "Jack" (Linda) Cunningham and Thomas Cunningham, preceded her in death. Though they have passed on, the memories shared with them remain an integral part of Maureen’s story.
She will be missed immeasurably—a light extinguished too soon but never forgotten. Maureen's loving, caring, and compassionate nature has left an indelible mark on all who knew her. Her life was a magnificent gift, and her memory will continue to inspire kindness, generosity, and love in the hearts of her family and friends.
Rest in peace, Maureen Kowal. Your presence enriched countless lives, and your spirit will live on in the love you so freely gave.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service to honor Maureen's life on Saturday, April 18, at Newcomer Funeral Home of West County. Service will begin at 11:00 am, with visiting, sharing, and refreshments to follow until 2:00 pm.

Memorial contributions may be made in Maureen's honor to the American Cancer Society or to Special Olympics.
