Patrick J. Houlahan, a devoted father, grandfather, and educator, passed away on April 26, 2026. Born on June 23, 1944, in Manchester, Iowa, Patrick’s life was marked by service, commitment to family, and an enduring passion for education and community engagement.
Patrick graduated from Coggon High School in Iowa before pursuing higher education at St. Gregory's College in Shawnee, Oklahoma, where he earned an Associate of Liberal Arts degree. He furthered his studies at Loras College, receiving a Bachelor's degree in Political Science, and ultimately attained a Master’s degree from Northeast Missouri State University. His academic journey laid a solid foundation for a lifetime career in education and leadership.
After serving honorably in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, Patrick dedicated his early professional life to teaching and coaching in southeastern Iowa. He held multiple high school teaching and girls' basketball coaching positions at Blakesburg High School and WACO of Olds, demonstrating his commitment to youth development and athletic excellence. He then spent 11 years at Assumption High School in Davenport, Iowa, and distinguished himself by both educating and inspiring students while coaching the girls’ basketball team, including leading them to a state championship in 1981. Later, he devoted the majority of his working years to the Francis Howell School District in St. Charles County, Missouri, serving as Executive Director of Administrative Services, where his leadership was widely respected.
Known for his attention to detail, humor, and his characteristic "Irish Goodbye," Patrick was a thoughtful and motivated individual who took great pride in his own accomplishments and especially those of his family. He relished staying connected through updates on the lives of friends and family. His affection for his small-town Iowa upbringing was reflected in his close relationships with siblings and longtime friends.
Patrick’s hobbies and interests were diverse. He enjoyed politics, traveling, reading, and keeping up with sports, particularly following the St. Louis Cardinals, St. Louis Blues, and the Iowa Hawkeyes. As a music lover, he delighted in sharing his favorite artists with others. He was an active man and found joy in running, tennis, golf and even continued walking several miles a day in his later years.
Patrick was very proud of his Irish heritage, family and considered his greatest legacy to be his children and grandchildren. He was known for remembering every birthday and special occasion. He ensured that heartfelt cards, messages and the occasional singing voicemail were always sent in celebration. He was equally proud of his 44 years of sobriety and his role in the Alcoholics Anonymous community, including founding a group at his church to support others in recovery.
Patrick’s survivors include his three children: Brian Houlahan (Sarah Baumgardner), Megan Houlahan (Trish Lillygren), and Michael Houlahan. He was a beloved grandfather to James Houlahan, Micaela Houlahan, Thomas “Finn” Houlahan, Mackenzie Orme, and Samuel Orme, and great-grandfather to Jasper Orme. He also leaves behind three brothers: Thomas Houlahan (Kathy), John Houlahan (Nancy), and Jim Houlahan (Karen Klouda-Houlahan); as well as Mark “Brandon” Orme and many other family members and friends who will remember him fondly.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Loretta Houlahan; father, Joseph Houlahan; two sisters, Judy McMahon (Ron) and Mary-Loretta Badger (Jerry); and former spouse and mother of his children, Mary Houlahan.
A visitation will be held on May 16, 2026, from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM at St. Patrick Catholic Church, located at 405 S Church Street, Wentzville, Missouri. This will be followed by a Mass from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the same location.
