Raymond William Henderson, Sr., born on August 17, 1928, in St. Louis, Missouri, passed away peacefully on July 3, 2025, in St. Peters, Missouri. He lived a remarkable life, marked by significant achievements and an unwavering dedication to his family.
Raymond's illustrious career spanned over four decades with the Post-Dispatch, where he dedicated himself to his work before retiring. In addition to his professional pursuits, he served his country honorably in the United States Navy, during which time he showcased his athletic talents by playing football and baseball for the Navy team.
A proud alumnus of Beaumont High School, Raymond left an indelible mark on his peers as a talented soccer and football player. His athleticism extended beyond school, as he had a successful career in baseball, having signed with the St. Louis Cardinals where he played as a catcher. He also had stints with the St. Louis Browns and the Braves during their time in Boston. In recognition of his sporting prowess, Raymond was inducted into the St. Louis Baseball Hall of Fame in 1997, a testament to his accomplishments in the world of sports.
Raymond lived life on his own terms, characterized by an unwavering love for his children, Raymond W. (Rhonda) Henderson, Jr., Kevin M. Henderson, and Scott J. (Tracy) Henderson. He cherished his role as a father and would do anything for his kids. His legacy is further enriched by his grandchildren: Amy Henderson, Alicia Mooy, Lacey (Doug) Campbell, Kelsey (Eric) Wideman, Ross (Tiffany) Henderson, Tara Geisler, Dylan Henderson, and his great-grandchildren: Eric Mooy, Shane Mooy, Noah Mooy, Logan Campbell, Will Campbell, James Campbell, Chase Foelsch, Sean Lawson, Ross Henderson, Jr., Haley (Michael Tucker) Shook, Nate Stonebarger, Keegan Stonebarger, and his great-great-grandchildren, Leilani Tucker and Oliver Mooy, who is due to arrive in November.
Aside from his professional and familial commitments, Raymond found joy in fishing and golfing, pursuits that brought him happiness throughout his life. He also enjoyed bowling with his sons, and was known for his vibrant personality and his ability to live each moment fully, embracing life with passion and dedication.
Raymond was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Eileen Patricia Henderson, and his parents, John and Helen Landzettel.
The family will receive guests during visitation on Thursday, July 10, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Newcomer Funeral Home in St. Peters, Missouri. A funeral service will follow on Friday, July 11, 2025, at 11:00 AM, with interment in Calvary Cemetery to honor a life well-lived.
