Thomas Willard James, Jr., known to many as Bill, passed away peacefully on April 5, 2026, in Ballwin, Missouri. Born on September 12, 1940, in Gibsland, Louisiana, Bill’s life was a tapestry woven with dedication, humor, and an unwavering love for family.

Bill’s journey was marked by distinguished service in the United States Air Force, where he proudly served for 20 years including during the Vietnam War, navigating reconnaissance flights over Vietnam, and retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. His career began as a navigator, but the skies truly became his second home as he spent the majority of his tenure flying military aircraft as a pilot and instructor pilot. This deep connection to aviation was a passion that remained with him throughout his life.

Following his military career, Bill transitioned into a successful role in the private sector, focusing on military aircrew training. Those who had the privilege to work alongside him remember a man who was fair, respected, and deeply admired by colleagues and employees alike. He carried himself with integrity and a gentle strength that made him a remarkable leader and mentor.

Away from his professional life, Bill was a man of many interests and delights. His love of flying was unmatched, a joy that soared above all else. A gifted Bridge player, he found camaraderie and challenge at the card table. His enthusiasm for golf and the great outdoors brought him peace and joy, especially revered were the moments he spent on a lake, surrounded by nature’s quiet beauty. Bill’s lively spirit was evident in his fondness for “yanking people’s chains,” a testament to his sharp sense of humor that brought smiles to the faces of those around him.

Bill was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother. The cornerstone of his pride and happiness was his family. For 45 years, he stood steadfast beside his wife, Emily James, sharing a partnership filled with love and resilience through life’s many seasons. His son, Mike, along with his wife Christina, and daughter Andree, provided Bill tremendous joy, as did his grandchildren Elsah, Harrison, and Eden, who affectionately remembered their grandfather’s warmth and kindness.

His brother Larry, together with wife Sandra, his nephews, niece, and cousins, remain cherished parts of his extended family circle. Though their hearts carry the sorrow of loss, they hold dear the memories of Bill’s fairness, good nature, and generosity of spirit. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Willard James and Carrie James, and his brother and sister-in-law Bob and Barbara James, reminders of the legacy and lineage from which Bill sprang.

Bill was adored by children and dogs alike, a reflection of his approachable, gentle nature. He was a good man who faced life’s struggles with good humor and grace, never failing to lift the spirits of those who knew him.
