Listen to Obituary

Virgil Albert Petrich, 84, passed away peacefully on June 17, 2026, in St. Charles, Missouri, with his beloved wife, Bonnie, by his side.

Virgil was born on March 20, 1942, in Little Falls, Minnesota, to Albert and Ruth (Carlson) Petrich. He grew up on the family farm in Randall, Minnesota, where he learned the values of hard work, faith, and family that guided him throughout his life. After graduating from Little Falls High School, he attended St. Cloud State University before beginning a career in St. Louis dedicated to supporting our nation's defense as a civilian employee with the U.S. Army Audit Agency and the U.S. Army Materiel Command, serving under ALMSA and SIMA. He helped build, audit, and manage the data systems that tracked military funding and supplies and his work helped ensure that American soldiers around the world received the equipment and resources they needed. He devoted more than 30 years to this work before retiring in 1998. Following retirement, he enjoyed staying active and worked part-time for several years in the liquor department at Mid-Towne IGA, a grocery store owned by family friends.

Virgil and Bonnie were married for 62 years, sharing a life built on love, faith, family, and friendship. Together they raised their family, supported one another through life's ups and downs, and enjoyed the many blessings that came with a life well lived. In their later years, they enjoyed traveling together, watching St. Louis Cardinals baseball, and spending time with family.

Virgil was a devoted father to his three daughters and was actively involved in his daughters' lives, including coaching their softball teams for many years. He later became a proud grandfather and great-grandfather. Whether attending their games, performances, and special events or simply spending time together, he cherished every opportunity to be part of their lives.

A lifelong sports enthusiast, Virgil loved following many sports and rarely missed an opportunity to watch or discuss a game. He especially enjoyed bowling and golf and treasured the many years spent on the lanes and golf courses with his friends. One of his proudest accomplishments was bowling a perfect 300 game. Whether cheering for his favorite teams, bowling with his buddies, or enjoying a round of golf, sports were one of life's great pleasures.

Faith and service were central to Virgil's life. He was a dedicated member of Our Savior Lutheran Church, where he generously volunteered for many years. He helped care for the church grounds, organized church softball programs, served as an usher, and was a long-time member of the finance team. His willingness to serve reflected his commitment to his faith, his church, and his community.

Virgil is survived by his wife, Bonnie (Hain) Petrich; his daughters, Lorilee (Dean) Short, Michele (Jim) Winkle, and Karla (Brannon) Champagne; his grandchildren, Chandler (Josh) Lonigro, Karsten (Paige) Short, Anna Hopper, and Cole Hopper; his great-grandchildren, Lucas Lonigro and Myles Lonigro; his sisters, Joan Burnett and Karen Oothoudt; and his brothers, Dale Petrich and Alan (Sharon) Petrich.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters-in-law, Grace Petrich and Wanda Petrich; and his brothers-in-law, Ray Burnett and Ashley Oothoudt.

Virgil will be remembered for his devotion to family, his strong faith, his service to others, his love of sports, and the kindness, dependability, and quiet strength he brought to those around him. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

A memorial service celebrating Virgil's life will be held on Friday, July 24, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 2800 Elm Street, St. Charles, MO 63301. Family and friends are invited to gather one hour prior to the service at the church.
