William Charles Gerdel Sr., affectionately known as Bill, passed away on January 19, 2026, at the age of 84. Bill was born on October 18, 1941, in St. Louis, and was a man distinguished by his steadfastness and unwavering love for his family.
Bill's life was characterized by his level-headed demeanor and a diligent work ethic. He was firmly committed to ensuring that his family was well-cared for, which was evident throughout his life's endeavors. Apart from being a devoted family man, Bill proudly served his country in the Navy and Army Reserves, where he held the position of Coxswain for LCM Landing Craft. His patriotism culminated in a memorable Honor Flight to Washington D.C. in June of 2023, an experience that marked a poignant chapter in his life.
In his leisure time, Bill pursued a variety of interests that brought him joy. He was an avid collector of trains and took great pleasure in spending time on the water. A passion for golf also marked his life; he not only played the sport but was employed at a golf course for over ten years, combining work and enjoyment in a way few are fortunate to experience.
Bill is survived by his beloved wife, Annetta Gerdel; their two sons, William "Bill" Charles Gerdel, Jr. and James "Jimmy" (Candace Grover) Gerdel; his three cherished grandchildren, Jennifer Gerdel, Will (Allissa) Gerdel, and Sophia Gerdel; and his sister, Shirley (the late Melvin) Bramblett, along with a host of other family members and friends who will continue to honor his memory.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Florence Annetta Gerdel, and father, William Emil Gerdel. Bill's legacy will be remembered through the love and kindness he shared with all who knew him.
